If you have a passion for yoga, check out our new programs including the Yoga Studies Certificate that focuses on the history, theory, philosophy, and practice of yoga and how it can benefit your everyday life as well as Yoga Teacher Training that prepares you to become a yoga instructor.

Yoga Studies Certificate

The Yoga Studies Certificate focuses on the history, theory, philosophy, and practice of yoga and how it can benefit your everyday life. The principles gained from the certificate will give you an understanding of the benefits yoga can have when integrated into other professional settings, such as exercise science, physical or occupational therapy, social work, mental health counseling, psychology, education, and more. This interdisciplinary certificate consists of coursework from the College of Education, Criminal Justice, Human Services, the College of Medicine, and the College of Arts & Sciences. Students will complete 8 credits of core coursework, 4 credits of applied Yoga Studies coursework, and 6 credits of electives for a total of 18 credit hours.

Yoga Teacher Training

To become a Certified Yoga Teacher (CYT) through the University of Cincinnati, you must complete all requirements for the Yoga Studies Certificate (see below), including HFL 2071 and HFL 2072 as your electives.

Note that any courses you took within the certificate curriculum prior to applying for the certificate will count toward completion.

Complete all requirements for the Yoga Studies Certificate, including HFL 2071: Yoga Teacher Training I and HFL 2072: Yoga Teacher Training II

  • Note that these are both face to face courses, and may be held at an off-campus studio in Cincinnati.
  • You can begin taking the HFL 2071/2072 courses without yet being enrolled in the certificate. However, certificate completion is required to receive your official certification.
  • HFL 2071 and HFL 2072 will count toward your 6 required elective credits for the certificate program.

Once all above requirements have been satisfied, you will fill out the Certificate Completion form to be awarded and sent your official certification.

About HFL 2071:

This is the first course in a two-course series that prepares students to become Yoga instructors. In this course, you learn the foundations of becoming a yoga teacher, including yoga posture alignment, assists, props, and modifications as well as posture sequencing and anatomy as it relates to yoga. You learn and practice teach various postures, breathing techniques, and meditation. This course serves as a pre-requisite for Yoga Teacher Training II, which will be offered Fall 2023. Both Yoga Teacher Training I and Yoga Teacher Training II must be taken to complete the Yoga Teacher Training at UC.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the foundational concepts of Yoga through in-depth study of the Eight Limbs of Yoga and the four Paths of Yoga.
  • Demonstrate simple and complex yoga postures through the incorporation of proper alignment and breathwork.
  • Apply various yogic practices in everyday life, such as meditation, mindfulness, guided imagery, and journaling.
  • Explain the mental, physical, and spiritual benefits of yoga practice and its applicability to the well-being of self and others.
