Residents perform 3, 4 week-long rotations at the Hoxworth Blood Center as part of their training in blood banking and transfusion medicine. Founded in 1938, Hoxworth Blood Center is the second oldest blood center in the United States and has a storied history as a pioneering center in the field of transfusion medicine.
Each 4 week-long rotation has focused objectives on operational departments of the blood center, including collections, manufacturing, recruitment, transplantation immunology, cellular therapies, and therapeutic apheresis. Additionally, throughout each rotation, residents are active participants in traditional transfusion therapies, management, complex antibody work ups, transfusion reaction work ups, blood utilization reviews, and clinical case reviews.
Since its founding, Hoxworth has been committed to supporting research so that it may better serve the community. With its dedicated Research Division, Hoxworth provides residents with opportunities to participate in research ranging from basic biological and clinical research through phase III clinical trials.
For residents seeking to sub-specialize in blood banking and transfusion medicine, Hoxworth, in partnership with the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center, is proud to offer a 1-year ACGME-accredited Fellowship in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine designed to prepare fellows for leadership roles as Medical Directors of regional or community blood center or Directors of hospital transfusion services.
