Pathobiology & Molecular Medicine

The UC Department of Internal Medicine offers a graduate program in Pathobiology and Molecular Medicine, which is designed for applicants who have an interest in basic science and its role in the understanding and treatment of human disease.

The program, administered jointly by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Department of Internal Medicine, focuses on biomedical research and leads to a doctorate degree.

Pathology is a branch of medical science that concerns itself with the study of the nature of human disease and its causes, whereas internal medicine is concerned with therapeutic strategies to prevent or cure human diseases. 

Students are trained to combine cutting-edge molecular and cellular biology with an understanding of disease mechanisms.

Who should apply?
Senior undergraduate students in the biological sciences (see pre-requisites) who have an interest in applied medical science. However, the Program has also accepted medical doctors, medical laboratory technicians, and veterinarians wishing to pursue a research degree.

Duration of Study:
Most students take five years to complete the program. During this time, the students receive a stipend of $30,000/year, health insurance, and complete tuition remission.
