About the Division

The UC Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine is recognized as a national leader in education, research and clinical medicine.

Research

Areas of particular interest to the faculty include asthma, innate immunity, cystic fibrosis, critical care, rare lung disorders, health care outcomes, emphysema, interstitial lung disease, sleep disorders and lung cancer and interventional pulmonary medicine.

The division has a strong record of extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association and elsewhere to support top-level basic and translational research into the mechanisms of these diseases.

Clinical Medicine

The division consists of 31 full-time physicians and basic scientists engaged in research, teaching and patient care. Most of these activities take place at the College of Medicine's Medical Sciences Building, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical CenterUC Health University HospitalCincinnati Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) Medical CenterDrake Center, and UC Health Physicians Offices in Clifton and West Chester.

Education and Faculty

The three-year fellowship training program is the heart of the division, and is strengthened by close interactions with colleagues in the college of medicine, Cincinnati Children's, the VA Medical Center and the Cincinnati community. Support from an NIH T32 training grant and Cystic Fibrosis Training grants provide opportunities for extended protected time to pursue research interests.

Division faculty and staff participate in numerous clinical studies involving both outpatients and hospitalized patients, and ranging from critically ill patients in the intensive care unit to rare lung disease populations (lymphangioleiomyomatosis, alveolar proteinosis, alpha one antitrypsin deficiency and others). Division basic research laboratories focused on:

  • Innate immunity
  • Asthma
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Pulmonary infections
  • COPD

Educational programs of the division include training of medical students, residents and fellows in pulmonology and critical care medicine. The division also sponsors several lecture series on aspects of clinical and research pulmonology and critical care medicine, which are open to the university and the community at large.
