Academic Overview

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine offers comprehensive educational opportunities for medical students, residents and fellows.

In addition to the third-year clerkship, medical students are offered three electives in pulmonary medicine. These intense course electives allow students to participate in all facets of pulmonary care, including inpatient and outpatient pulmonary consultation and evaluation, pulmonary procedures (thoracentesis, pleural biopsy, bronchoscopy) and diagnostic plan and management strategy execution.

Residents are afforded experience rotating through the division, as well as attending conferences, lectures and grand round presentations. Most of the educational activities take place at the Medical Sciences Building, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, UC Health University Hospital, the Cincinnati Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, Drake Center and UC Health Physicians’ Offices in Clifton and West Chester.

Our division also offers a pulmonary disease and critical care medicine fellowship, which provides comprehensive training in all clinical and basic aspects of pulmonary and critical care medicine.

A primary objective of the program is to instill an appreciation for scientific investigation and to train physicians for future careers in academic pulmonary medicine. To accomplish this goal, the program offers two pathways; a clinical track focused on clinical training and research and a research track focused on clinical training and basic, bench-top research or investigator initiated clinical research.

Fellows receive 36 months of training and a typical schedule includes 12 months in the critical care unit (nine in the MICU and three in specialty ICUs such a Neuro-Surgical ICU, Surgical ICU and Cardiovascular ICU), 12 months on consult services and 12 months on elective rotations or research rotations.
