Curriculum/Schedule

The Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at University of Cincinnati Medical Center is a fast-paced four years, meeting a broad range of educational, vocational and social needs for the prospective candidate. These are provided in an environment of state-of-the-art care, supportive supervision and fellowship among the residents.

With its nationally renowned faculty, its three busy affiliated hospitals and its active volunteer teaching faculty, the residency offers candidates the opportunity to graduate as well-educated, experienced and capable practitioners.

The level of training and the national reputation of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and its faculty enhance opportunities for fellowship training following residency, both within the institution and nationally.

The curriculum consists of rotations in the ambulatory and hospital settings. We currently have a 13 block schedule, with each rotation being four to six weeks in duration. Each resident receives four weeks of vacation taken in one-week increments throughout the academic year.

Our program is on a night float system all four years while rotating on Labor and Delivery and in third year the residents complete one night float rotation at our community hospital affiliate, The Christ Hospital.

The Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at University of Cincinnati is a designated Ryan Residency Program Training site. Created in 1999, the  Kenneth J. Ryan Residency Training Program is a national program operated through the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health at the University of California-San Francisco. Family planning is essential to women's health care and is incorporated throughout the 4 year training, but this designation allows our first year residents to participate in an enhanced family planning curriculum. Residents are trained on LARC and other methods of contraception, values-clarification exercises to explore their role and feelings throughout the family planning process, and rotate to a local Planned Parenthood affiliate and community health centers for a wide variety of experience. There is a partial participation policy in place that allows each resident to determine their level of comfort within the rotation in compliance with ACGME guidelines. 

Third year residents have an elective rotation included in their schedule. This may include away rotations at select institutions. Several of our residents have recently been accepted and completed away electives at the following institutions: Mayo Clinic Cleveland for Urologic Gynecology; University of California, San Francisco, Reproductive, Endocrinology, & Infertility; Brown University, Women and Infants Hospital, Female Pelvic Medicine Reproductive Surgery;  NIH Clinical Center, NICHD REI Fellowship Program; Brunschwig Rotating Residency Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering; overseas to Tanzania through the Village Life Program and MD Anderson Felix Rutledge Fellowship for Gynecologic Oncology.
