Developmental Fellowship

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Department of Family & Community Medicine (UCDFCM) is proud to offer a Developmental Fellowship for physicians interested in becoming leaders in the field of developmental medicine and caring individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  The fellowship program is one year in length, fellows will become certified in developmental medicine through the American Academy of Developmental Medicine, and graduate from the University of Cincinnati LEND program. Graduating fellows will be prepared to serve as leaders in developmental medicine in academic or community settings.
This is a non-ACME-accredited fellowship in which the Fellow is appointed as an entry-level faculty member in the University of Cincinnati Department of Family & Community Medicine. The fellow will provide care to individuals with intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Cincinnati at the Timothy Freeman, MD Center for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Fellows will additionally rotate with other target specialties and complete the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Related Disorders (LEND) at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. One half-day of time will additionally be protected for the fellow to pursue research/projects of interest.

Fellowship Prerequisites:
The following qualifications/competencies are required for an applicant to be considered for the Developmental Medicine Fellowship:

Completion of a U.S. ACGME-accredited Family Medicine Residency, Internal Medicine Residency, Medicine/Pediatrics Residency, or Family Medicine/Psychiatry in good standing

  1. Relevant Specialty Board Certification
  2. Eligible for medical licensure in the State of Ohio
  3. Demonstrated commitment to serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities

Fellowship Activities/Curriculum
To accomplish the Developmental Fellowship Objectives, residents participate in the following activities:

  1. Clinical care
    1. Provide primary care and psychiatric care if applicable to adults with IDD at the Timothy Freeman, MD, Center for IDD at UC Health at least 5 half days per week
    2. Rotate with interdisciplinary team members including but not limited to psychiatry, PM&R, behavior supports, nutrition, and mental health counseling
    3. Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the clinical sites
    4. Attend interdisciplinary team meetings monthly at the clinic site
  2. Teaching
    1. Teach and supervise rotating 4th year medical students as a part of the Primary Care for Adults with IDD elective at UCCOM
    2. Help develop and teach the IDD longitudinal curricular thread currently being taught at UCCOM
  3. Scholarship
    1. Participate in Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, including the evidence-based medicine project
    2. One half day per week will be protected for research based on fellow’s interest
    3. Expected to present a small research project or QI project and present at a national meeting such as AADMD, AACPDM, or AUCD
