Exploring Public Health in Ghana will provide students with hands-on, real-world applied learning to public health and infectious diseases in Ghana.

The course will focus on HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis and include ~10 weeks of instruction at the University of Cincinnati followed by a 10–12 day study tour to Ghana.

Introductory lectures will provide a working knowledge of public health and microbiology as they pertain to our understanding of HIV and tuberculosis. Topics to be covered include modes of transmission, the pathogen life cycles, prevention/education, treatment strategies, and social/ethical issues, with a particular emphasis on sub-Saharan Africa, as well as a broader discussion of public health issues and the public health infrastructure in Ghana.

Students will also learn more about Ghana through guest speakers, videos, readings, and student-led, in-class discussions.
