Medical Sciences students, staff, and faculty are part of a global community. Through the Medical Sciences Program, the Honors Program, student organizations, and UC International, students are traveling the world to get outside their comfort zones and connect with others.
Students traveled to South Africa and Botswana as part of the course Public Health and Infectious Disease in Southern Africa (MEDS 4050). The course is taught by Dr. Jason Blackard, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and the Director of the Office of Global Health.
Med Sci students traveled to Paris, France to visit the Pasteur Institute and other scientific venues dedicated to the advancement of biomedical science.
Favorite Memories: taking seven and a half weeks to embrace the culture and to get a glimpse of the life of someone who lives there!
Favorite Memories: exploring the region; seeing all the beautiful architecture and history; being fully immersed in the culture!

My favorite part of this experience was definitely being put into a situation where I was not familiar with my surroundings. I was not the best at communicating in Spanish and did not know much about Peruvian customs and culture. Regardless, I was able to converse with the patients at the clinic and was excited to learn how the health care system runs in another country. Roaming around the city with nothing but a map was also entertaining as I witnessed the lifestyle of Peruvians first hand.

With the rigorous, structured curriculum of the Medical Sciences major, it can be difficult for students to spend an entire semester or year studying abroad. However, students can still experience other countries and continents first-hand through experiential learning opportunities.
Some of the ways Medical Sciences students have traveled abroad are:
In the Footsteps of Louis Pasteur: Science & Art in Paris | The goal of this one-week study abroad over winter break is to enhance professional development in the medical sciences by visiting scientific venues in Paris that explore how modern medicine is under-pinned by early scientific discoveries. The scientific program covers aspects of microbiology, surgery, physiology, anatomy, pathology, and scientific instrumentation. The trip is led by Dr. David Askew.
Study Tours with the University Honors Program.
Language Immersion Experience | Students who choose to minor in a language have the opportunity to study abroad as part of the completion of their minor requirements. Opportunities include Madrid, Spain(summer), Caen and Normandy, France (summer), Antigua, Guatemala (spring break), and Rabat, Morocco (summer).
