Clinical Embryology delves into normal and abnormal development of human embryos, with a focus on the aspects of human development that can be applied to clinical practice. The main content of the course centers on human development, starting with fertilization, and continues with the first four weeks of embryonic development. These are followed by discussions of development of the organ systems (cardiovascular, pulmonary, etc.). Each topic begins with an introduction to normal development, followed by descriptions of how disruption of normal development leads to major developmental anomalies. Subsequent clinical presentations describe the presentation of patients with congenital anomalies, and how they are treated. Note that little time is spent on molecular genetics and research, which are covered in other developmental biology or comparative anatomy courses.
