All MEP residents complete a scholarly project that can be submitted as a manuscript for publication, an abstract for poster or oral presentation, or a workshop at regional or national meetings. The MEP leadership team has expertise in educational research, curriculum development, and scholarly writing, and will help residents cultivate their ideas into scholarly products. Pathway residents can also take the Medical Education Pathway electives, which include protected time for project work.

Both IM and Peds have research pathways that Med-Peds residents can join to receive mentorship, participate in journal clubs, and be connected with faculty members who are participating in research in their field of interest.

Med-Peds residents can apply for this NIH sponsored program that extends residency by one year to provide protected time for research. This program provides access to dozens of NIH funded laboratories, support from an active mentorship team, and research-specific professional development opportunities, including personalized career mentoring. The CCHMC-based pathway pairs residents with global health trained mentors to complete internationally-focused research projects and to participate in quarterly GREAT (Global Research, Education, Advocacy and Training) meetings. Med-Peds residents can also apply for substantial global health research funding through the Global Research Opportunities Worldwide (GROW) award (PDF).

2-4 week blocks of concentrated research elective time are available on both IM and Peds to help residents complete research projects.

Each resident receives funding annually from the Office of Graduate Medical Education to support registration and travel to share their amazing work with the broader scholarly community. Additionally, our Med-Peds leadership team has experience with applying for grants, managing research funding, and connecting residents with content-specific research mentors. We know financial support is helpful for scholarship, and our goal is to get you access to the funding needed for innovation and discovery!
