A Message for Prospective Residents

Emergency Medicine is incredibly complex and challenging work. The work demands a broad understanding of the acute presentations of nearly every discipline in medicine, a wide procedural skill set, and the ability to rapidly shift your focus from one patient to the next. On any given day you are challenged to care for patients from every walk of life, often on the worst day of their life, and always in need.

Residency training offers the unique, once in a lifetime opportunity to intently focus on developing the skills, expertise, and knowledge base needed to succeed in your future career.  The residency you ultimately choose should be intentional and comprehensive in their approach to structuring your training program.

The goals of our training program are to:

  1. Provide you with the teaching and clinical exposure you need to go and work in any practice environment (rural, international, community, or academic)
  2. Provide you with the mentorship, opportunity, and professional development needed for you to become a leader in the field of Emergency Medicine.

As the oldest residency training program, with a long track record of training the leaders of our field, we accomplish these goals through

  1. A graduated responsibility training model challenging you in new ways in every year of the program
  2. Diverse clinical sites allowing you to train with a wide variety patient populations and institutional resources including an urban/Academic Level 1 trauma center, 2 community suburban EDs, a quaternary care Pediatric Level 1 trauma center, a community Pediatric ED, as well as the prehospital environment with unparalleled HEMS and ground EMS experience
  3. Nationally known and recognized faculty dedicated to training and mentoring the next generation of leaders in Emergency Medicine
  4. Structured elective time with the individualized mentoring needed to develop a niche in the field of EM
  5. An unparalleled alumni network providing you with the connections you need to jump start your career in your first years out of residency

You should be incredibly proud of your successes and of the medical training you have received to this point. Your residency training program should challenge you to grow into the best possible Emergency Physician you can be while providing the support, mentorship, and opportunities needed to build a long, meaningful, and successful career in Emergency Medicine. We believe you will find that our program offers the depth of clinical training, breadth of experience, and culture of mentorship needed to prepare you not just to practice Emergency Medicine, but to lead and advance the field.
