Dr. Gregory J. Fermann is the Richard C Levy Endowed Chair and Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where he has been a faculty member since 1997. He earned his MD from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1992 and completed his Emergency Medicine training at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ. Dr. Fermann also holds a BA in Chemistry from Saint Louis University, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and the Alpha Sigma Nu national Jesuit honor society.
Dr. Fermann has held several significant administrative roles, including Executive Vice Chair and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. He is the Founder and Director of the Emergency Medicine Clinical Trials Center and has secured over 7 million dollars of extramural funding for federal, industry and foundation sponsored emergency care research since 2012. He has also served as Medical Director for the Center for Emergency Care at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and his leadership has been pivotal in the development and implementation of numerous clinical research initiatives and quality improvement programs.
A prolific researcher, Dr. Fermann has been involved in numerous clinical trials and studies focusing on emergency medicine, particularly in areas related to risk stratification in atrial fibrillation, acute coronary syndrome, and venous thromboembolic disease. He was awarded Clinical Trialist of the Year by the University of Cincinnati in 2016. He has served as the Principal Investigator of the University of Cincinnati SIREN Hub sponsored by NHLBI and NINDS. As the steering committee member of the SOAR registry, the AHA sponsored CHANGE AFIB program and the QUANTUM AF study, Dr Fermann is a recognized national leader in acute cardiovascular emergencies with over 250 peer reviewed publications and presentations on the subject.
He has been recognized with numerous awards for his contributions to research and clinical practice, including the Best of Research Forum Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians in 2023 and the Ohio ACEP Emergency Physician Leadership Award in 2023. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and received the 2023 Timothy Freeman Award for Sustained Excellence from UC Health University of Cincinnati Medical Center in 2023.
In addition to his clinical and research accomplishments, Dr. Fermann is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine where he serves on the Finance, Workforce, and Operations and Administration Committees. He is Fellow of American College of Emergency Physicians and the Heart Failure Society of America.
Dr. Fermann continues to contribute to the field of emergency medicine through his roles as a mentor, educator, and researcher, shaping the next generation of emergency physicians and advancing the quality of emergency care in Cincinnati, the Tri-State region and the US.
