Master of Public Health - Environmental Public Health Concentration

The study of environmental health involves learning to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and design programs and systems to control exposures in the environmental or occupational setting that are causing or may be expected to result in adverse human health effects. The UC MPH Environmental Public Health concentration provides training in toxicology fundamentals, infectious diseases, risk assessment, policy development, advocacy, and implementation. This program prepares students for positions within public health, for positions in agencies including, but not limited to, the Environmental Protection Agency, National Institutes of Occupational Safety and Health, local health departments, state health departments, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, non-profit agencies and for-profit agencies.

All UC MPH concentrations are science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) designated. The classification of instructional program (CIP) code used for the UC MPH Program is 51.2202.

MPH-Environmental Public Health Concentration Competencies

Upon completion of the MPH degree in the Environmental Public Health Concentration students, will be able to:

  1. Describe direct and indirect human, ecological and safety effects of major environmental and occupational agents.
  2. Explain the general mechanisms of toxicity resulting from various occupational and environmental exposures.
  3. Describe genetic, physiologic, physical, and psychosocial factors that affect susceptibility to adverse health outcomes following exposure to environmental hazards.
  4. Identify major international, federal and state regulatory programs, guidelines and authorities that control environmental health issues.
  5. Explain approaches for assessing, preventing, controlling, and communicating environmental and occupational hazards that pose risks to human health and safety.
