About the Residency Program

The faculty and staff of the UC Department of Anesthesiology are proud of our residents and the teaching we provide. We aim to produce consummate consultants in anesthesiology and we provide an excellent stipend and benefits to those who qualify for our program.

Here, we value an atmosphere of camaraderie, fairness, equality and mutual respect. We pattern our curriculum after the ABA-ASA Joint Council on In-Training Examinations content outline. Residents and faculty place equal emphasis on didactics and clinical teaching. Our teaching staff supports the critical areas of anesthesiology training onsite, including:

The Department of Anesthesiology provides the four-year curriculum required by the American Board of Anesthesiology for certification as a consultant anesthesiologist.

While most recent graduates have chosen academic positions after residency, many have accepted private practice positions in Greater Cincinnati and throughout the United States.

Our anesthesiology residency includes a one-year internship and three years of clinical and didactic anesthesia training (CA-1, CA-2, CA-3). The anesthesiology faculty comprises anesthesiologists and educators who are dedicated to clinical and academic excellence. The training of anesthesiology residents is directly supervised by members of the anesthesiology faculty with increasing clinical responsibility and independent work as the resident progresses in his or her training.

The Department of Anesthesia at the University of Cincinnati provides anesthesia services at University of Cincinnati Medical Center in 33 operating rooms, 14 labor/birthing centers and the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. The University of Cincinnati Medical Center is a Level I adult trauma center, giving residents significant opportunities in anesthesia for trauma surgery. Our position as a regional transplant center offers substantial experience in hepatic, renal and pancreatic transplantation.

Residents complete their pediatric anesthesia training at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in its operating rooms. Annually, 50,000-plus anesthetics are delivered at UCMC and 25,000-plus anesthetics are delivered at Cincinnati Children’s.

Residents are trained on pain management at the UC Health Pain Management Center, which utilizes an advanced interventional and multi-disciplinary approach to treating and educating pain patients. Residents gain experience in ambulatory and regional anesthesia at West Chester Hospital and at the West Chester Surgical Center in West Chester, Ohio.

Ten positions are offered in each of the four years (PGY-1, CA-1, CA-2, and CA-3). All positions are offered through the NRMP Match.

You are invited to join us to meet the residents and learn about our program at one of our virtual open houses which will be lead by our residents.
