About the Program

The University of Cincinnati Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio has three available positions in our ACGME-accredited critical care anesthesiology fellowship training program.  We offer both a one-year fellowship for trainees with a background in anesthesiology or a two-year fellowship for candidates with an emergency medicine background.

Fellows are trained by passionate and enthusiastic critical care faculty with backgrounds in Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine. Together we strive to educate and inspire the next leaders in critical care medicine.  Under the direct supervision of energetic faculty our fellows are exposed to a wide variety of critical illness as they rotate through six intensive care units (approximately 120 beds) in a large urban tertiary care center. Our institution is a level 1 trauma center and features a high-volume solid organ transplant program, including liver, kidney and heart transplantation.  In addition to the care of complex critically ill medical and surgical patients, we are proud to offer our trainees ample exposure to cardiac mechanical circulatory support including extracorporeal life support (ECLS) and ventricular assist devices. We also boast the first air ECMO transport program in the region, granting our fellows abundant training in this arena.

Our critical care division, and thus our fellows, take the lead role in our institution’s shock team, eCPR team, pulmonary embolism response team (PERT) and in all evaluation and management of ECLS/ECMO.   Our physicians care for the sickest patients in the region, a point of pride that is reflected in the abilities of our graduates. We also possess a comprehensive, multidisciplinary didactic curriculum including multiple weekly lectures, formal board review and bedside ultrasound courses, monthly journal clubs and quarterly ECLS and PERT multidisciplinary quality improvement meetings.   This, coupled with the wide variety of critically ill patients to which our fellows are exposed, has resulted in a 100% board passage rate for our program for the last 8 consecutive years.

Our recent graduates have gone on to critical care careers in both private practice as well as in large, prestigious academic centers such as The University of Utah and The R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.
