Overview

Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology. Since our department was founded in 1970, its educational, clinical and research activities have grown dramatically. Our residency program has a broad range of experiences and teaching in all of the subspecialties.

The program is approved by the Accreditation Committee for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) with our next self-study date scheduled for 2021, and offers ACGME-approved fellowships in pain management, cardiac anesthesia, critical care and pediatric anesthesia, as well as a fellowship in neuroanesthesia. We are also pleased to announce that we have permanently increased the number of available positions in our residency match to eight.

The UC Department of Anesthesiology provides services for over 32,000 anesthetics annually in 46 anesthetic sites, primarily at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

University of Cincinnati Medical Center was named one of the Top 15 Teaching Hospitals in the U.S. by Solucient and is consistently ranked as one of "America's Best Hospitals" by U.S.News and World Report. In addition, University of Cincinnati Medical Center is home to one of the few nationally certified major adult burn treatment centers in the nation; the region's only adult Level I trauma center and active solid organ transplantation programs.

The Pediatric Anesthesia Department at Cincinnati Children's performs over 25,000 anesthetics and 5,000 pain consults each year. Children's performs all types of surgeries, including cardiac, neurological, craniofacial, transplantation and major spine operations. Cincinnati Children's anesthesia faculty is internationally recognized in anesthesia for premature infants, pediatric cardiac surgery, difficult airway problems and chronic pain conditions.

Our residency provides state-of-the-art facilities, cutting edge NIH-funded research, focused didactics and a wide range of advanced training. The intimate size of our residency program, coupled with the wide variety and high complexity of cases at UC, provides a unique learning experience for residents which can be matched by few programs.

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is devoted to the fields of clinical anesthesiology, perioperative medicine and pain management. We provide safe and outstanding clinical service; advance the practice of anesthesiology through continued learning, excellent teaching, and research; and respond to the needs of our patients and community.

The research mission of the UC Department of Anesthesiology is to better understand the neurological and molecular mechanisms of pathological pain conditions including acute and chronic neuropathic pain, inflammatory pain and other intractable pain, and to develop new strategies for their treatment.
