Research

The University of Cincinnati Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) maintains a productive research portfolio on clinical investigations in ambulatory surgery, anesthetic technique, and surgical outcomes. These investigations examine a variety of clinical challenges specific to the specialty. The primary goals of research in OMS are utilizing new information and integrating the use of technology to provide an individualized approach to evidence-based healthcare.

UC OMS embraces the multidisciplinary essence of oral and maxillofacial surgery with collaborative research involvement in clinical and non-clinical areas such as Pediatrics, Hematology & Oncology, Otolaryngology (ENT), Engineering and Applied Sciences, Environmental and Public Health Sciences, and many others.

Residents are given time throughout their second year dedicated to research. Each resident is required to individually develop a research question and design a study with the support of a faculty mentor and research staff. This mentored research approach facilitates academic productivity and creates meaningful evidence for improvement of clinical practice. All research is encouraged to culminate in the production of a manuscript for contribution to peer-reviewed literature in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

We are currently engaged in studying the following clinical and social impact areas:

  • Use of Buffered Lidocaine in Mandibular and Maxillary Extractions
  • Use of Buffered Lidocaine in the Setting of Odontogenic Infections
  • Demographics and Mortality in Patients who have Received Full Mouth Extractions
  • Quality of Life Scoring in Patients who have Received Full Mouth Extractions
  • Determining if Deep Space Neck Infection (DSNI) Outcomes Can be Associated with Temporal Immune Assays
  • Incidence of Difficult Sedations with Propofol in Patients with diagnosed Mental Health Disorders
  • The Burden of Cost placed on Patients seeking Care for Facial Trauma
  • Incidence of Orthognathic Hardware Failure in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Safety of Ambulatory Anesthesia in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Practices
  • Evaluation of the impact Kulmod has at Improving Patient Comfort and Well-Being Post Orthognathic Procedure
  • Ultrastructural, Chemical, and Biomechanical Analysis of Third Molars Extracted from Patients with Psychiatric Disorders
