Academic Overview

The Division of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology is involved in a variety of academic activities. Opportunities range from a two year fellowship for those interested in specializing in this new and exciting field of Obstetrics and Gynecology to medical student rotations which allow a glimpse of the unique components of the specialty.

Fourth-year medical student elective rotations are offered through the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Such experiences allow students an early exposure to the role of gynecology in pediatric care.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Residents rotate in the PAG division as first-year residents. This experience provides the first chance for OB-GYN residents to learn skills in interacting both with pediatric and adolescent patients, as well as parents, both in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Both clinic and operating room encounters are part of the rotation.

Teaching through the PAG division occurs through a variety of activities. These activities include:

• Discussions and daily bedside rounds.
• Pre- and post-operative care and management.
• Outpatient (i.e., vaginoscopy, diagnostic laparoscopy) and inpatient (ovarian cystectomy, vaginal reconstruction) surgical procedures.
• Monthly PAG case presentation at PAG practice conference.
• Monthly Multidisciplinary PAG/Pediatric Urology/Pediatric Surgery conference.

We offer a two-year clinical fellowship intended to provide additional clinical and academic experience in pediatric and adolescent gynecology for individuals who have completed a residency program in obstetrics and gynecology and who wish to pursue careers as clinician educators or investigators in academic medical centers.

The Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (PAG) Fellowship Program seeks to create a new model of gynecological care, in which expert gynecologists work side-by-side with a multidisciplinary team of providers to provide comprehensive care for girls with complex reproductive health issues. The PAG program maintains a referral practice of pediatric and adolescent gynecology within the Department of Surgery.

Our program also maintains an ongoing relationship with the Division of Adolescent Medicine, which also houses the teaching program for pediatric residents, UC medical students and the fellowships in Adolescent Medicine.

Few medical centers have expert faculty or the established patient population to support clinical training in pediatric and adolescent gynecology.

Nationally, Cincinnati Children’s has the largest full-time gynecological faculty of any institution serving only children and adolescents. As a result, it has drawn national attention for its leadership in NASPAG, the Committee on Adolescent Health Care of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the Adolescent Initiative of the Association for Reproductive Health Professionals and the Adolescent Reproductive Research Group of the International Clinical Epidemiology Network.

International Health

Our involvement in International Health centers on our surgical mission program. Our team has participated in surgical missions to Honduras, Ethiopia and Ghana. Our goal is to improve the outcomes for children with gynecologic problems through education of local gynecologists and surgeons, medical and nursing personnel and students and collaborative surgery with local providers.

Our diversified team allows us to participate in concurrent community outreach, multi-level education, clinical and operative care and coordination of ongoing support.
