Research

For fellows interested in research, the University of Cincinnati provides a variety of clinical and basic science research opportunities. In addition to working with the outstanding cancer researchers within the Division, fellows have the opportunity to work within the University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute, the College of Medicine and University Hospital Centers of Excellence that is comprised of numerous departments, divisions and disciplines.

The core of our basic science research occurs within the Cancer and Cell Biology Department where scientists focus on understanding the molecular basis of cancer, with the overall goal of developing new and better treatments for the disease. The research interests of our faculty include molecular biology of red cell differentiation, genetic epidemiology of lung cancer and the relationship between cancer and metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity.

The Division of Hematology Oncology is directly involved with UC Cancer Institute clinical trials. Fellows with an interest in clinical research can participate and be co-investigators on clinical trials, initiate study ideas and write protocols with their mentor.

The University of Cincinnati Early Stage Drug Development Program also provides an ideal setting for fellows to gain experience in experimental therapeutics. In addition to institutionally-based clinical trials, the division also participates in multi-center trials, SWOG (Southwest Oncology Group) and NSABP (National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project).
