The overall purpose of the electrophysiology lab rotation is to prepare trainees to function at high levels of clinical performance in cardiac electrophysiology.
Fellows participate in all aspects of pre-procedure planning, perform the critical technical manipulations of the procedure and demonstrate substantial involvement in post-procedure care while being supervised by teaching faculty responsible for the procedure.
Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology fellows gain specific experience in intensive diagnostic, therapeutic procedures and patient management, and conducts research in the field of Cardiac Electrophysiology. The VA Medical Center offers the fellow a complex patient population and provides electrophysiology procedures and exposure to the Robotic Ablation System.
Graduates of the University of Cincinnati's Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology fellowship program complete more than 400 ablation cases and 450 device cases, and easily meet ACGME requirements.
Fellows attend continuity clinic where they are exposed to a wide spectrum of clinical electrophysiology pathologies, troubleshoot and reprogram pacemakers and Bivs, and ICDs in follow-up. The fellows receive mentorship in arrhythmia and device management in an outpatient clinic one day each week.
Cardiac electrophysiology fellows have the opportunity to participate in clinical research trials managed by the Division of Cardiovascular Health and Disease. There is a strong interest in device therapy as well as ablation. Original research and case presentation projects are encouraged.
Education is further enhanced in weekly conferences including the Division of Cardiovascular Health and Disease Grand Rounds and Department of Internal Medicine Grand Rounds.
