Educational Goals

Clinical training at the University of Cincinnati's CCEP fellowship follows the recommendations outlined in the 2015 ACC/AHA/HRS Advanced Training Statement on Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology COCATS 4 Task Force 11: Training in Arrhythmia Diagnosis and Management, Cardiac Pacing, and Electrophysiology.

The program at the University of Cincinnati provides the education necessary to reach COCATS Level III training which is required of individuals seeking subspecialty board certification in CCEP ABIM CCEP Training Board Eligibilty Requirements.

During the two-year program, fellows in Cardiac Electrophysiology will be provided the education and mentorship to develop the knowledge of intracardiac recordings from the high right atrium, HIS bundle electrogram, RV apex and coronary sinus tracing.

Fellows will gain the knowledge of basic electrophysiologic concepts in sinus node function, AV nodal function, and the concept of measuring a refractory period in the atrium, the ventricle, and the AV node.

RajshekerHeartDissectionFirst Year of Training

  • Focus of training for the first six months is primarily on pacemaker and ICD implants, diagnostic EP studies, AV node catheter ablation and ablation of typical atrial flutter.
  • Second six months moves the fellows towards participating in more complex procedures, including atypical atrial flutters, atrial fibrillation, and implantation of cardiac resynchronization devices.

Second Year of Training

  • TamPoonehSenior CCEP fellows sharpen their clinical skills with a primary emphasis on the following techniques.
    • Complex catheter ablations
    • Simple and complex lead extractions
    • Epicardial approach to catheter ablations
    • Complex ablation of ventricular tachycardia (including those requiring percutaneous mechanical support)
    • Along with our interventional cardiology staff, implantation of left atrial appendage occlusion devices for prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation.
    • Noninvasive studies such as transtelephonic monitoring, 24-hour holters, event recorders and tilt table testing are also routinely performed and evaluated by the fellow.
