About the Residency Program

The dermatology residency program, directed by Alan Fleischer, MD, is recognized nationally as a premier program. The pass rate on the board examination for the past 20 years has been 100 percent. The number of graduates who choose academic dermatology is much higher than the national average.

In addition to the dermatology residency, the department offers an ACGME accredited Micrographic Surgery & Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship and postdoctoral basic science research fellowships.

Residents have access to a varied patient population drawn from a 100-mile radius including Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

There are over 40,000 patient visits per year by patients seeking primary dermatological care or being referred for special services by regional health care centers or from private practices.

Didactic Education

Residents are exposed to interesting and complicated patients in grand rounds (one or two per month) in which the director/faculty lead residents to critically contribute to the discussion of diagnosis and management of patients that have just been examined. Patient discussion is followed by a lecture and/or journal club.

Noted national dermatologists and other physicians and researchers from around the country are sponsored as guest speakers in the Endowed Lectureship Series seven or eight times per year.  Faculty from across UC Health are invited to give lectures to the residents in specialties related to dermatology.  The Cincinnati Dermatological Society speaker also presents an additional educational session for the residents in addition to the main meeting lectures.

Other teaching sessions occur weekly. Dermatopathology conferences review topics and slides from teaching collections and interesting cases from the university and the community. Clinicopathologic correlation sessions take place regularly. Clinical textbook review from several textbooks is a core component of education, as are faculty lectures on general dermatology, pediatric dermatology and surgical dermatology.

Journal clubs meet approximately once a month in which all residents participate in reviewing the contents of current journals in Dermatology–The Journal of Investigative Dermatology, the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, the Archives of Dermatology and other selected journals. There also basic science, biomedical ethics, pediatric dermatology, and surgical dermatology journal clubs.
