Overview

Biomedical informatics (BMI) is an interdisciplinary field that combines knowledge of information sciences and medical sciences to optimize use and application of biomedical data across the spectrum--from molecules to individuals to populations.

Biomedical Informatics is now the key to understanding biology and medicine. As an avalanche of data and an increased sophistication of technology change the way biomedical research is conducted, the discipline of biomedical informatics is an integral component of clinical and translational research for the health care infrastructure. Demand for researchers and health professionals trained in the field is rapidly increasing.

We are the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

We represent one of the nation's oldest medical colleges and partner with leading hospitals and research institutions in the United States. Our researchers use computational methods to solve pressing health problems in bioinformatics, clinical informatics and genomics. Through UC, we offer a PhDThis link opens in a new window. and a graduate certificateThis link opens in a new window. in biomedical informatics. We also provide research IT support services and UC’s Center for Health InformaticsThis link opens in a new window. is a part of this new domain.

Department objectives include:

  • Enabling the UC academic healthcare enterprise to make better use of biomedical data and technology for new discoveries, innovative science, and improved healthcare.
  • Developing and implementing highly transformational approaches for more completely understanding and positively impacting disease.
  • Facilitating collaborations and data sharing among participating institutions in Cincinnati and worldwide.
  • Educating the next generation of biomedical data scientists.
