In the summer of 2019, the biomedical informatics program at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children's sponsored a special Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) track for younger students interested in the field of biomedical informatics. For more information on the SURF program experience.
Biomedical informatics offers students the opportunity to use computational methods to solve pressing health problems in clinical informatics, genomics and precision medicine, with a special focus on quality improvement, systems biology, patient safety, biostatistics, decision support and more. Applicants with interests in biology, math, computer science, engineering, bioengineering, and statistics are encouraged to apply.
Three to seven students will be accepted for this paid ten-week mentored research experience. The program kicks off in late May and concludes the first week in August with the Capstone poster event.
Applicants must be undergraduate science, technology, engineering and math students residing or attending school in the United States with a minimum 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Students with at least two semesters of completed computer science courses are given preference. When applying, students are encouraged to list areas of research interest so that they can be matched with appropriate mentors.
