A number of student groups at the University of Cincinnati work in the area of global/public health. More about these student groups and their activities can found by visiting the following websites:
The Global Health Interest Group is a student-led organization at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. This group aims to cultivate interest in global health, inform students of global health opportunities, and aid in preparing those students for their experiences abroad.
The mission of GlobeMed is to connect the assets of a student-led network to grassroots health organizations working in communities around the world. By inspiring and training university students to mobilize resources for global health, we seek to build a movement fighting for a more sustainable and secure world. Our vision is to build a world where all people have the opportunity to live a healthy life. GlobeMed at the University of Cincinnati exists to promote partnership with Social Action for Women in Mae Sot, Thailand. SAW provides basic health care and access to education and sustainable work for the Burmese migrant workers living in Thailand.
Through the national Global Brigades organization, the world's largest student-led global health and sustainability movement, our Public Health chapter strives to increase the quality of life of impoverished rural communities. This is accomplished through service trips to Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua, and Ghana consisting of collaboration with active student members, health care workers, staff members, and local people. We work to improve the quality of life through running sustainable infrastructure projects involving the installation of properly ventilated, eco-friendly stoves, the construction of latrines, showers, and concrete floors. The club also fosters public health education centered on specific issues, through formal educational events held at schools within the communities being served. The mission of the Global Bioethics Workgroup is to create a forum to discuss and reflect on ethical, socio-cultural and regulatory issues in the social, behavioral, life and biomedical sciences, issues that are affecting the global world. It also aims to promote educational and collaborative interdisciplinary research opportunities in global health ethics. PIH Engage is building the right to health movement by recruiting and training teams of dedicated volunteer community organizers. These teams drive year-long campaigns focused on advancing the right to health.
Together, we will demand that the right to health be protected for all people, everywhere. For more information, please visit pih.org
Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are the most common diseases of the world's poor. Through a collaborative partnership with the Sabin Vaccine Institute, the END7 initiative is working towards eliminating the seven most common NTDs by 2020. At the University of Cincinnati, END7 is a group of students dedicated to educating our community about these diseases and their implications on nutrition, education, health, and economic productivity in vulnerable communities. Our goal is to contribute to ending extreme poverty by fundraising in support of the global distribution of medication that will ultimately control and eliminate NTDs. Contact END7atUCExec@mail.uc.edu to learn more about how you can get involved.
Engineers Without Borders is dedicated to utilizing professional skills to improve the quality of life in communities in developing nations.
