Global Opportunities for Trainees and Faculty

The Christ Hospital/University of Cincinnati Family Medicine Residency Program is committed to teaching and training family physicians to become caring leaders and advocates of health care within the community.The program has a longstanding commitment to care for underserved populations, both in Cincinnati, across America, and internationally. All of our residents have annual Global Health experiences that are covered by the program 100%. The Global Health Care course (FAM 060138 / 060139) offered by the Department of Family and Community Medicine in April of each year is available to residents from other UC programs as well. The elective combines a field experience in Guatemala with didactics in Cincinnati to prepare residents for their experience. During the field experience, participants offer field clinics in low resource, underserved villages in rural Guatemala. The course is team-taught and interactive, focused on the care of vulnerable populations in domestic and international settings, and utilizes the social determinants of health as a framework.

In addition, the Department of Family and Community Medicine sends three other groups each year to Guatemala in July, November, and February for two weeks in partnership with the non-governmental organization Wuqu Kawoq. During the trips, participants offer primary care in mobile clinics in villages throughout rural Guatemala. Patients receive follow up and specialty care as needed through Wuqu Kawoq. Residents from other programs are encouraged and welcome on the trips. Preparation for the trips is essential for the experience and is available through online learning modules.

The University of Cincinnati Global Surgery Program offers an 8-week elective General Surgery Rotation at Mzuzu Central Hospital in Malawi, Africa. Residents at the 4thyear level participate on rounds, run outpatient clinics, and perform basic and complex general and pediatric surgery cases throughout their time at Mzuzu Central Hospital. In addition to the clinical services provided, the University of Cincinnati staff and Residents actively participate in educational programs for the Malawian clinical officers and nursing students in every aspect of patient care. The Global Child Health Educational Program is designed to empower pediatric residents at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital to make a difference for all children, especially the poor and under-served. The program offers a structured international experience for all residents, as well as a Global Child Health Pathway for residents who are passionate about global health. There are three target sites, including the Navaho Reservation in the US, the Dominican Republic, and Malawi in southern Africa, although other sites are also available.
