National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program

This federal program, managed by the Department of Health and Human Services, makes awards to medical students planning careers in the primary care fields of family medicine, general internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology or general pediatrics.

The scholarships are awarded on scores from a scholarship application, which rates students upon the strength of their commitment to practicing in a primary care shortage area. In addition, students who are identified as disadvantaged, either educationally or economically, are given preference.

The recipient commits to one year of service for each year of funding, which includes tuition, fees, educational costs and a monthly living stipend that is taxable. Service payback occurs in a physician shortage area and the minimum service commitment is two years. Applicants for the scholarship must first be accepted by a medical school.

The application cycle opens in the spring.  Decisions are announced in the fall. Students who receive a NHSC scholarship are requested to notify the Financial Services Office as soon as they receive notification.

Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program

In this scholarship program, a student's medical school tuition, required books and equipment and most academic fees are paid and the student also receives a monthly stipend to cover living expenses. Qualifying recipients may be eligible to receive a $20,000 sign-on bonus.

Recipients of the scholarship incur a military service obligation of one year for each year they are funded, with a minimum obligation of two years. Service payback occurs after residency training.

To be eligible, a student must be a U.S. citizen. Competitive GPAs and Medical College Admission Test scores are necessary and a physical exam is required. To contact recruiters and receive more information, go to the following Web pages:
