Conferences

Didactic education is important to systematically expose residents to every aspect of plastic surgery. Weekly attending-led curriculum conferences are held Wednesday morning (core plastic surgery) and Friday mornings (Hand). Case Conference and Grand Rounds occur every Wednesday morning. Residents give short presentations at Grand Rounds several times a year to improve presentation skills and introduce the entire department to topics of particular interest. M&M Conferences and Journal Club meetings are held monthly. All didactic education is protected even while on off-service rotations. In addition, we have cadaver labs scheduled quarterly with attending and visiting professor participation, injectable clinics quarterly, and several visiting professors throughout the year. We have microsurgery sessions in the surgery lab several times a year, and the residents have access at all times to a fully-functional operating microscope in our conference room for dry lab practice. All residents have access to ASPS Education Network, PRS, and resources of the Health Sciences Library.

Research

Residents are expected to submit a paper to the Ohio Valley Society of Plastic Surgery meeting and ideally a peer-reviewed journal or text book chapter each academic year. Junior residents are able to take prescheduled research days to complete work, and senior residents have flexibility in their schedules to pursue projects. With prior approval, expenses for resident travel to meetings will be paid if the resident is presenting at the meeting. In addition, stipends are provided for yearly academic travel or to purchase educational materials.
