I am proud to present the Department of Surgery at the University of Cincinnati, where our missions are:
To fulfill these missions, we continue to build on our historical foundation of exceptional clinical service, teaching, and research. Although we come together from varied backgrounds, we all share the goals of surgical excellence, scientific discovery, and professional development.
The department of surgery comprises more than 160 core surgical faculty plus advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacists, support staff who all take great pride in their patient care and teaching responsibilities while maintaining strong relationships with our institutional colleagues and community partners.
Our academic achievements have also continued to be very strong, and included in these webpages and our annual report are listings of resident and faculty awards, publications and presentations. The Department of Surgery is proud to have secured new NIH and extramural grants providing funding for the impactful discoveries coming from our laboratories dedicated to improving the health of our patients.
Along with the UC College of Medicine, our department’s vision is to be indispensable through excellence in surgical care, in the training of tomorrow's surgeons, and in the discoveries that will improve healing and give hope to our patients.
Thank you.
UC Surgery Annual Report 2025-2026
At the University of Cincinnati, the Department of Surgery is dedicated to training the next generation of surgeons, scholars, and leaders. Our surgical residency program is rigorous but has a longstanding tradition of providing residents with unparalleled clinical and operative experience, exposure to cutting edge translational, basic science, and outcomes research, and outstanding mentorship within each of the surgical subspecialties. Minimal numbers of fellows, dedicated faculty, strong resident culture and a welcoming low-cost Midwest city means our residents not only learn to be excellent surgeons, they thrive here.
For over 10 years, 100% of our graduating chief residents seeking a fellowship have matched into the subspecialty of their choice. For those entering general surgery practice directly, we are proud that they can successfully care for patients with a broad spectrum of general surgical issues on day 1 in either an academic or community setting. Whether at the bedside, in the ICU, at the robotic console or by open or laparoscopic techniques, our graduates are among the most well trained in the country.
Train boldly, practice skillfully and compassionately, lead into the future.
