Residency Program in General Surgery

Surgeons
Scholars
Leaders

At the University of Cincinnati, the Department of Surgery is dedicated to training the next generation of surgeons, scholars, and leaders. Our surgical residency program has a longstanding tradition of providing residents with unparalleled clinical and operative experience, exposure to cutting edge translational, basic science, and outcomes research, and outstanding mentorship within each of the surgical subspecialties. Year after year, our graduating chief residents go on to match at the nation’s most competitive fellowships, build successful practices both at major academic institutions and in the community setting, and develop into prominent leaders within the field.

UC Surgery Annual Report 2024-2025

Message from the Program Director

I am proud to present the Department of Surgery at the University of Cincinnati, where our missions are:

  1. To provide comprehensive, compassionate and skilled surgical services for Cincinnati and the surrounding region.
  2. To train the next generation of surgeon leaders.
  3. To advance the state-of-the-art and scientific basis of the discipline of surgery.
  4. To provide leadership in ensuring health care for all members of the Cincinnati community.

To fulfill these missions, we continue to build on our historical foundation of exceptional clinical service, teaching, and research. We celebrate diversity while sharing the goals of surgical excellence, scientific discovery, and professional development.

The department of surgery comprises more than 160 core surgical faculty plus advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacists, support staff and affiliated institution faculty who all take great pride in their patient care responsibilities while maintaining a strong relationship with our institutional colleagues and community partners. They are also dedicated to training approximately 200 medical students and over 100 residents/fellows each year.

Our academic achievements have also continued to be very strong, and included in these webpages are a representative listing of resident and faculty publications and presentations. The Department of Surgery is proud to have secured new NIH and extramural grants providing funding for the impactful discoveries coming from our laboratories dedicated to improving the health of our patients.

Along with the UC College of Medicine, our department’s vision is to be indispensable through excellence in surgical care, in the training of tomorrow's surgeons, and in the discoveries that will improve healing and give hope to our patients.

Thank you.
