Roshni joined the Ngwenya Neurotrauma Laboratory in 2021 as a UC undergraduate majoring in computer science. Although she had previously used her computer science skills to program robots and prevent cyber-attacks, she used her knowledge to decipher RNA-seq data and has now graduated with distinction.
Caroline was an MD Candidate at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine during her time in the Neurotrauma Laboratory. She has a bachelor's degree in Behavioral Neuroscience and Public Policy and an MS in Global Medicine with plans to pursue a career in Neurosurgery and global health policy. She studied contusion evolution following TBI with a special interest in optimizing the role of machine learning in future clinical practice. After her time in the Neurotrauma Laboratory, she continued her training as a Neurosurgery Resident at Duke University.
Maxon Knott joined the Translational NeuroTrauma Laboratory as a freshman undergrad student. He has interest in both clinical and basic science research with previous projects involving concussion symptomatology and experimental traumatic brain injury. Outside of academics, he enjoys skiing and Cincinnati's rich brewing history. He graduated UC in 2022 and matriculated in an MD-MBA program at University of Miami in Florida.
Yara Alfawares worked in the Translational NeuroTrauma Laboratory while an undergraduate student at the University of Cincinnati. After her time in the lab she started as a medical student at University of Cincinnati, studying to be a future surgeon
Zachary Porter joined the Translational NeuroTrauma Laboratory in the summer of 2017 after completing his first year of medical training at University of Cincinnati. After graduation from medical school, he went on to further his neurosurgical training as a neurosurgery resident at University of Arkansas
Katherine Rhame joined the Translational NeuroTrauma Laboratory for the summer of 2017 and became active in our retrospective clinical research projects. After completing her time in the lab and finishing med school, she continued her training as a Neurology resident at University of Cincinnati.
Fatima Anwar was an undergraduate student at Washington University in St. Louis. She spent her summers in Cincinnati and worked in the laboratories of Drs. McGuire and Ngwenya from 2015-2017. After graduation, she continued her training as a medical student at The Ohio State University.
Benjamin Ramser was a medical student at the University of Cincinnati. He worked in the Translational NeuroTrauma Laboratory the summer of 2018 and received a NIH MSSRP award to support his research project, “Alterations of neurogenesis-associated signaling pathways in dentate gyrus following traumatic brain injury”
Kinsey Barhorst spent the summer of 2019 as a medical student in the Translational NeuroTrauma Laboratory and completed a successful project, in collaboration with Dr. Jed Harting's laboratory, exploring spreading depolarizations in the hippocampus. She received a Neurosurgery Research and Education Fund (NREF) medical student fellowship for her summer research project, “Effects of cortical spreading depolarizations on the hippocampus”. After graduation from medical school, Dr. Barhorst pursued residency training in plastic surgery.
Erika Correll worked as a research assistant in the Translational NeuroTrauma Laboratory from 2017-2019. She is currently pursing her dream of a career in academic neuroscience and matriculated in a PhD graduate program at University of Massachusetts Amherst studying sensorimotor gating of the startle reflex.
