Application Process & FAQs

How do I apply?

The University of Cincinnati Department of Internal Medicine accepts applications only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We will begin reviewing applications in September 2024 when ERAS opens for programs.

Who should apply?

The PSTP program is directed toward applicants who are planning an academic career. Preference in the application process is given to those with substantial prior research training, experience and publications.

When should I apply?

Applications are accepted through ERAS starting in September 2024.

Please include the following in your application:

  • Dean's Letter
  • Internal Medicine Chairman's Letter
  • 2 Clinical Letters of Reference
  • In addition, please email a one page letter which includes your areas of possible subspecialty interests to Dr. Jack Rubinstein at Jack.Rubinstein@uc.edu.

How large are the residency programs?

  • Categorical - 30-32 PGY1 opportunities
  • Physician Scientist - 1-2 PGY-1 opportunities
  • Medicine-Pediatrics - 7 PGY-1 opportunities
  • Preliminary Medicine - 3-5 PGY-1 opportunities

Do you accept international graduates?

We are able to interview only the most exceptional candidates from non-U.S. medical schools due to the extremely competitive nature of our training programs. We cannot originate an H-1B visa, but can accept a J1.

In considering medical graduates for interview, our typical international resident candidate will have recent clinical experience in the United States with excellent letters of reference.

Most candidates selected for interview will have graduated from medical school within the past two or three years.

International medical graduates are not required to have an ECFMG certificate or USMLE Step 2 results in order to apply and interview with our program; however, the ECFMG certification process must be complete and USMLE 2 must be passed to be eligible for our match list.

Who should I contact for more information?

We will promptly respond to all inquiries.
