Residents participate in clinical research throughout the program. We have a robust clinical research program in the Divisions of Thoracic Surgery, Adult Cardiac Surgery and Congenital Cardiac Surgery. We have several large databases, including a prospective lung cancer outcomes database, a prospective esophageal cancer outcomes database and a lung cancer screening database, which serve as the foundation of multiple ongoing research projects. Peterson Pathrose, MS, serves as the Director of Research, and assists residents with their projects.
There is opportunity to become involved in the Cincinnati Research in Outcomes and Safety in Surgery (CROSS) group, a multidisciplinary group focused on health services research that has grown to include over six surgical faculty and a research team of over twenty residents and students. This group focuses on surgical outcomes and disparities in surgical and cancer care.
The division of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery maintains an active multi-investigator research lab. Research areas include: improved donor organ utilization for thoracic transplantation, novel anticoagulation and anti-inflammatory strategies for mechanical circulatory support, and prosthetic valve development.
Residents in the PGY 3-6 years attend one national meeting annually and are also supported to attend meetings in which they are presenting a paper.
