Hematopathology

Hematopathologists: Drs. Anna Balog, Youssef Khafateh,  Ahmad Mansour, and Nives Zimmermann

The Hematopathology Division is an active teaching service, hosting medical students, our own Pathology residents, and Hematology-Oncology fellows. We have the unique privilege of working closely with both the UC Health Clinical Laboratory and the Surgical Pathology Laboratory. Our close association allows us to coordinate testing to solve challenging patient presentations using hematology, flow cytometry, histopathology, immunohistology, and specialized molecular testing.

Annually we receive over 300 bone marrow biopsies, over 100 surgical specimens for lymphoma workup, over 500 blood smears for pathologist review, and over 1500 hemoglobin electrophoresis samples. Working with our hematologist-oncologist colleagues, we have developed standardized bone marrow testing algorithms to ensure efficient, high-quality care for patients with benign and malignant hematologic disorders.

Our team consists of three board-certified hematopathologists, specially trained medical technologists, pathology assistants, certified histotechnologists, and laboratory support staff.
