Application to the Occupational Medicine Residency Training Program

General application requirements

Thank you for your interest in the Occupational Medicine Residency Program at the University of Cincinnati

Applicants must have completed a clinical year (PGY-1) before they start the UC Occupational Medicine residency program, and they should have completed or currently be completing their PGY-1clinical year before applying to our program. The clinical year must have been completed with a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Your experience must have included 11 months of direct patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

International graduates must also have either a current valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates or a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US licensing jurisdiction in which they are training.

To receive funding, applicants must be either eligible for the NIOSH-ERC program or active duty U.S. military personnel. To be eligible for the NIOSH-ERC program applicants must be either (1) U.S. citizens, (2) naturalized non-citizens, or (3) permanent residents.

Phase 1 of Application Process

Potential applicants interested in the Occupational Medicine Residency Training Program must apply through ERAS during the regular application cycle. ERAS will generally become available again after the summer hiatus in late August and our program can start accessing applications on September 15th.

Our program requires at least 4 letters of recommendation, and at least 3 of these must evaluate the applicant in a clinical setting.  Letters are required from each of the Program Directors of the applicant’s current and each of their past residency / GME training programs.  These Program Director letters can count toward the required 3 letters evaluating the applicant in clinical setting.  Applicants must request that the program directors include a summative evaluation (mentioning all 6 ACGME core competencies) in their letters.

Additional items that must be submitted through ERAS include:

• An updated curriculum vitae
• Licensing exam scores (USMLE or COMLEX steps 1 and  2, including  clinical knowledge and clinical skills).  USMLE or COMLEX step 3 scores should be uploaded if taken.  Preference is given to applicants who have taken and passed step 3, but applicants currently in their PGY-1 year at the time they are applying need to pass step 3 before they can start clinical rotations in the Occupational Medicine residency.
• Copy of medical school transcript
• Copy of MSPE (Dean’s Letter)
• Documentation of visa or permanent resident status (if not a U.S. citizen)
• Personal statement

Until all of these items are received, your file will not be considered complete.

Phase 2 of Application Process

Selected applicants will be asked to interview. After formal acceptance into the residency program, incoming residents will then be asked to complete an online application to our Graduate School for the MPH program.

All applications are initially reviewed by the Program Director. Selected applicants will be offered an interview with faculty members and current residents. Generally, 2-3 full-time residency positions are available each year. Residency positions generally begin on July 1st, but the Program offers flexible start time options on a case-by-case basis.
