Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental and Industrial Hygiene

Program Summary
All students learn to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and design programs and systems to control exposures in the environmental or occupational setting that are causing or may be expected to result in adverse human health effects. Academic study at the M.S. and Ph.D. levels is available in three areas of concentration: Comprehensive Practice, Occupational Safety and Ergonomics, Biomonitoring. Those interested in HazMat and emergency response may obtain an M.S. in a fourth area of concentration: Hazardous Substances. The M.S. areas of Comprehensive Practice and Hazardous Substances are accredited by ABET. The faculty maintain nationally and internationally recognized research programs; specific programs focus on the relation between ambient exposures and internal markers of effect, relation between exposure and such chronic outcomes as silicosis, lung cancer, ergonomic and biomechanical injury, asthma and neuromuscular response; identification of sources of toxins such as lead in the environment. Graduate study is supported by a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research training grant, University and other resources.

Master's of Science in Environmental & Industrial Hygiene

Program Summary
The Environmental and Industrial Hygiene division in the Department of Environmental and Public Health Sciences offers MS degrees in four programs:

• Comprehensive Practice
• Occupational Safety and Ergonomics
• Biological Monitoring
• Hazardous Substances

These academic programs are designed to prepare graduates for entry-level positions with industry, labor organizations or government, or to enhance and established career. As graduates advance to roles of substantial responsibility they are required to understand the conduct of research and interpretation of data: therefore, our MS program includes a research thesis.

These programs are components of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health-supported Education and Research Center (ERC) at the University of Cincinnati. The MS programs in Comprehensive Practice and Hazardous Substances include course work that has been accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc.

Program Summary
Students desiring more education in the occupational and environmental aspects of hazardous material may apply for this Certificate Program that builds on Comprehensive practice. Additional requirements include course work in biomonitoring and risk assessment, completion of a 40-hour program for hazardous waste site workers (see 29CRF1910.120), and the thesis topic must be relevant to hazardous materials.
