The mission of this scholarship is to further support and grow the underrepresented population of African-American medical students at the College of Medicine. Dr. Lucy Oxley is a 1935 alumna of the College of Medicine and the first African-American to earn a medical degree from UC. This scholarship honors her pioneering spirit in paving the way for future medical students.
The College of Medicine Class of 2003 used its class gift to establish the IvaDean Medical Student Scholarship Fund as a tribute to IvaDean’s profound influence and support on medical students as their advisor, advocate, and confidante. Years and years of medical student classes have interacted with IvaDean and she always made sure to take care of “her kids”. The scholarship is now endowed and provides meaningful support for many students annually.
