CEC co-leader, Dr. Burbage, partnered with the Cincinnati Museum Center to host summer camps for a second year in a row. This year’s theme was STEM and PhD and MPH students were paired to create activities for 3rd and 4th grade campers. The students come from multiple disciplines and next year this will be expanded to include undergraduates. For each STEM activity, the students made sure to incorporate environmental health concepts. Activities of the camps included building an air sensor and becoming food borne disease detectives. Other activities were conducted related to climate change, landfills/compost, and sustainable buildings.
This collaborative program not only provides an opportunity for kids to engage in STEM fields related to environmental health, but also provides university students the opportunity to translate science into easily understandable lessons, a skill all public health professionals should have. This also means that the campers can learn from scientists in training and this can influence the trajectory of their future academic interest.
