The ionic symphony: how cellular calcium and magnesium shape cancer metabolism
Dr. Madesh Muniswamy is a tenured Long Endowed Professor of Medicine and was a Director of the Center for Mitochondrial Medicine at UT Health San Antonio. He previously held faculty appointments in the Department of Cancer Biology at the University of Pennsylvania and the Department of Medical Genetics and Molecular Biochemistry at Temple University School of Medicine.
Following his doctoral training in biochemistry at the Welcome Trust Research Laboratory, Dr. Muniswamy completed postdoctoral training with Dr. György Hajnóczky at Thomas Jefferson University and Dr. Craig B. Thompson at the University of Pennsylvania, focusing on mitochondrial calcium signaling, cellular metabolism, and mechanisms of cell survival and death.
Dr. Muniswamy is an internationally recognized investigator in mitochondrial biology, cellular calcium and magnesium signaling, and metabolic regulation. His laboratory has made fundamental contributions to identifying and characterizing mitochondrial ion transport machinery, including components of the mitochondrial calcium uniporter, the mitochondrial magnesium channel MRS2, and the endoplasmic reticulum magnesium transporter ERMA.
His NIH-funded research investigates how intracellular ion signaling and organelle communication regulate mitochondrial bioenergetics, metabolic reprogramming, and disease progression, with implications for cancer, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders.
He has published extensively in leading scientific journals, including Cell, Nature Cell Biology, and Molecular Cell.
