DESCRIPTION:Dr. Madesh Muniswamy is a tenured Long Endowed Professor of Med
icine and was a Director of the Center for Mitochondrial Medicine at UT He
alth San Antonio. He previously held faculty appointments in the Departmen
t of Cancer Biology at the University of Pennsylvania and the Department o
f Medical Genetics and Molecular Biochemistry at Temple University School
of Medicine.Following his doctoral training in biochemistry at the Welcome
Trust Research Laboratory\, Dr. Muniswamy completed postdoctoral training
with Dr. György Hajnóczky at Thomas Jefferson University and Dr. Craig B.
Thompson at the University of Pennsylvania\, focusing on mitochondrial ca
lcium signaling\, cellular metabolism\, and mechanisms of cell survival an
d death. Dr. Muniswamy is an internationally recognized investigator in mi
tochondrial biology\, cellular calcium and magnesium signaling\, and metab
olic regulation. His laboratory has made fundamental contributions to iden
tifying and characterizing mitochondrial ion transport machinery\, includi
ng components of the mitochondrial calcium uniporter\, the mitochondrial m
agnesium channel MRS2\, and the endoplasmic reticulum magnesium transporte
r ERMA.His NIH-funded research investigates how intracellular ion signalin
g and organelle communication regulate mitochondrial bioenergetics\, metab
olic reprogramming\, and disease progression\, with implications for cance
r\, cardiovascular disease\, and metabolic disorders. He has published exte
nsively in leading scientific journals\, including Cell\, Nature Cell Biol
 ogy\, and Molecular Cell.
